Elaine Makas — Chair
I have been an active member of the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee for more than 20 years, having served in many capacities including Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer. I have also been actively involved in the State Democratic Committee, again, in many roles — e.g., Platform Committee, Executive Committee, Chair of the Caucus of County Chairs, Credentials Committee, etc. My proudest accomplishment thus far has been as the prime mover in getting the Maine Democratic Party to hold its 2010 State Convention in Lewiston.
I have also served for six years as one of Lewiston’s Representatives to the State Legislature and for eight years as an Androscoggin County Commissioner.
In addition, I am a Trustee for the Western Maine Labor Council.
In my non-political life, I have recently retired after teaching for more than 30 years at the university level — first, at The George Washington University in Washington, DC; then, for two years at Bates College; and, from 1993-2014, at The University of Southern Maine. I have a Ph.D. in Social Psychology.
My primary goals for the ACDC are to grow membership by reaching out to like-minded allies and focusing on our shared values so that we can stop the erosion of rights under the Trump and Lepage administrations — and to elect local, state, and federal legislators who can advance our Democratic goals for equality and justice.
Robin Beck — Vice Chair
I believe in justice and progressive social programs for everyone in these United States. There is no reason to be in poverty, to lack in the education you want, to be homeless, or to be without affordable, effective healthcare. I am a progressive Democrat who knows how important it is to work at the local, grassroots level to rebuild the Democratic Party based on a shared vision.
Originally from Ohio, I am a graduate of Indiana University with a B.A. in Political Science. I am the founder and former Executive Director of The GLBT Resource Center of Michiana located in Mishawaka, Indiana. I lobbied at the local, state, and federal level for LGBTQ rights. I became very interested in sustainability and rural revitalization, which brought my family and me to Maine.
In 2009, I was accepted into the Community Planning and Development Master’s Program at the Muskie School of Public Service in Portland. Following graduation in 2011, I moved my wife and daughter to a beautiful farm in Livermore Falls where we raise sheep for fleece and meat. I could not shake the political bug after leaving Indiana and became active in local politics, sitting on the Livermore Falls Planning Board and joining the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee and the Maine State Democratic Committee. I ran for County Commission in 2014.
Today I continue to work as a consultant in rural revitalization, economic development, and rural advocacy and to advise on rural economic development on the USDA’s National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board.
Mary Roussel — Treasurer
I have been a member of the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee since 1998, serving at times as the Secretary and, most recently, as the Vice Chair. As a member of the Democratic State Committee, I was elected to the Executive Committee and the Rules Committee.
While employed a the Department of Veterans Affairs in Togus, I was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees, and later, when I was transferred to the Department of the Treasury, I became a member of the National Treasury Employees Union (the NTEU). Even though I am now retired, I remain a member of NTEU. I am also a member of the Western Maine Labor Council.
I earned a B.S. degree in Accounting from the University of Maine, Augusta.
I am anxious to roll up my sleeves and work hard to strengthen and expand our Androscoggin County Democratic Committee.
Hannah Tower — Secretary
I am a first-year student at Bates College.
Although I am from Connecticut, I have gotten very involved in local politics since arriving in Lewiston through groups like the Bates Democrats, Bates Student Action, Unified L/A, and through volunteering with Emily Cain’s House campaign in the fall. I have also been a member of the Maine Democratic State Committee since January through the Maine College Democrats.
I am very excited to become more involved in the Maine Democratic Party and in local politics through the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee.
